Peru and Brunei to spur commercial cooperation

She expressed this while welcoming His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Head of State and Government of Brunei Darussalam, on a state visit during the APEC 2024 forum. In a protocol ceremony at the Government Palace, both heads of state signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a bilateral consultation mechanism aimed at enhancing economic and trade cooperation for the benefit of both nations.

“This memorandum will intensify our bilateral agenda, adding more depth while fostering dialogue and cooperation on common interests. Peru is committed to leveraging this new platform for dialogue,” she stated.

The President emphasized that both countries share foreign policy objectives, particularly in strengthening multilateralism and promoting international trade. “For the past 34 years, since we established bilateral relations, Peru and Brunei Darussalam have built a relationship based on shared interests in trade, investment, and sustainable development,” she underlined.

During their meeting, they agreed to foster dialogue in the agricultural sector to facilitate market access for Peruvian and Brunei products. The leaders also expressed interest in exploring energy cooperation to share best practices.

Additionally, both expressed concern over climate change and agreed to collaborate on mitigation and adaptation plans, in partnership with the ASEAN Center for Climate Change.
